A Masterpiece of a Musical
Falsettos is one of those productions which stays with you. Everyone who has been lucky enough to see Falsettos is forever moved by its incredible story.
It initially debuted on The Great White Way on Broadway in 1992. The timing of the musical’s debut couldn’t have been more poignant. Very soon after the AIDS crisis, a musical which explored the lives of two gay characters and the AIDS crisis itself through song and dance bought a stunning piece of theatre to the masses. And Falsettos was an instant hit.
Falsettos was nominated for seven Tony Awards during that run and won two for Best Score and Best Book of a Musical. Till today, Falsettos is regarded as a landmark of gay theatre.
Now, after 23 years, the critically acclaimed musical that everyone was talking about is making it’s return to Broadway. This exciting revival will be helmed by the original director and co-writer of the play, James Lapine. Lapine also helmed the 2012 Annie revival and has won three Tony awards himself. This means Falsettos will be in excellent hands.
When asked about Falsettos, Charles Isherwood of The New York Times said "There's hardly a moment in the exhilarating, devastating revival of the musical "Falsettos" that doesn't approach, or even achieve, perfection."
The Story of Falsettos
Falsettos is a story which is set in New York City in 1979. Marvin, a charming, neurotic, and intelligent man is our protagonist. The musical follows his life as he struggles to create a tight knit family unit from the people who are closest to him. This includes his ex-wife Trina, his adolescent son Jason, his gay lover Whizzer, and his psychiatrist Mendel. Oh, and there’s also his lesbian neighbors.
Marvin leaves his wife in order to move in with his new boyfriend, Whizzer. He’s committed to forging a stronger relationship and family unit for his son Jackson, too. He soon realizes that things aren’t going to work out the way he assumed. He desperately tries to turn Whizzer into a homemaker like his former wife but that doesn’t turn out too well. During this time, his son Jason, who is soon to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed, starts to suffer from extreme anxiety over having two fathers. As if things couldn’t get any more complicated, Marvin now learns that his psychiatrist, who is supposed to be helping him navigate these messy waters, has now fallen for his ex-wife Trina.
This hilarious, heart-warming, and touching musical is an honest look at what a modern family can look like in today’s day and age. By exploring the infinite possibilities of what constitutes a family, Falsettos offers audiences a pointed reminder that love can come in many forms and has the ability to tell infinite stories.
Throughout the play, Marvin will encounter numerous hurdles that he has to overcome. Each hurdle is a monumental life change which he will have to confront. Through the journey that this musical takes Marvin on, he’ll have to grapple with his own views on responsibility, love, and what being a man means for him.
