Elektra Opera – The Basis
The masterpiece by Richard Strauss is inspired by the Greek tragedy and Washington National Opera will present the revamped version by the producer Francesca Zambello. Set against the backdrop of harrowing, dramatic musical score, the intense one-act opera is an amalgamation of violence and tenderness. How far will the grief-stricken, yet determined Elektra go to take revenge for her father’s murder? She already told her sister Chrysothemis that her father’s last rotes will not be performed until her father’s murderer is brought to justice. The edge-of-the seat thriller offers a hair-raising finale that’s not to be missed.
Elektra Opera – The Cast & Performances
Elektra – Featuring Christine Goerke
Chrysothemis – Featuring Sara Jakubiak
Klytämnestra – Featuring Katarina Dalayman
Aegisth – Featuring Štefan Margita
Orest – Featuring Ryan Speedo Green
Christine Goerke as Elektra is outstanding, as she has the perfect stamina to shine as Agamemnon’s vengeful, implacable, and pathological daughter. Her vocal range receives a lot of applause as she displays rich voice that can easily tackle different notes. Sara Jakubiak does justice to the role of exceptionally opulent Chrysothemis. She showcases clean vocals and has enough stage presence to impress the audience. Katarina Dalayman gives her best performance as the demented and powerful Klytemnästra. She stands out in intense scenes especially when she gives out a mocking, blood curdling scream. Conductor Evan Rogister leads from the front, treating the audience to solo strings, triumphant orchestration, and beautiful passages.
Elektra Opera – The Creative Team & Its Impact
Director – Francesca Zambello
Set Designer – Erhard Rom
Costume Designer – Bibhu Mohapatra
Lighting Designer – Mark McCullough
Projection Designer – S. Katy Tucker
Choreographer – Eboni Adams
Elektra is beautifully driven by its creative team, starting with the director Francesca Zambello who knows how to pull the right strings. Erhard Rom has created a rather modern architect that includes pale colors, pop art, and chic lighting. Costumes by Bibhu Mohapatra include military uniforms, simple gowns, and maids’ dresses. The costumes and hairstyle of Elektra is more masculine, matching her personality. Rom and Mark McCullough have successfully created an ambiance that’s murky, dark, and almost eerie.
Washington National Opera is looking forward to open its curtains on the critically acclaimed opera in fall 2022, Elektra tickets for which are available. Will Elektra finally find justice or will her obsession consume her completely? Find out by watching the opera live.
