About Cleveland Ballet
Rising on the foundation of Cleveland San Jose Ballet, the Cleveland Ballet officially started in 2014. It was through the efforts of talented artists and dedicated volunteers that the company returned to the stage and that too with style.
In 2015, the Ballet presented “Past. Present. Future”, an artistic production that featured innovative dancing performed in collaboration with the Neos Dance Theatre based in Mansfield, Ohio. The co-direction of Gladisa Guadalupe of the Cleveland Ballet and Bobby Wesner of Neos, resulted in sold-out Cleveland Ballet tickets.
Exemplifying Cleveland Ballet’s passion for the art, the company has also ventured into outreach initiatives and educational programs.
The Artistic Team
Cleveland Ballet strives to come up with new works besides presenting the traditional ballets. Their fusion of neoclassical ballet with the classical reaches out to audiences of various age groups and backgrounds.
As the Artistic Director, Gladisa Guadalupe has breathed new life into the Cleveland Ballet. From Puerto Rican descent, Guadalupe along with a business partner invested her own money into the Cleveland Ballet and once she got things from ground up, urged the residents to play their part.
With every new season Guadalupe is adding more dancers to the roster and it has today become Playhouse Square’s resident ballet company. With Cynthia Graham as the Ballet Master and Meghan Haas as the Artistic Associate, the creative team is venturing into novel and out-of-the-box ideas.
While keeping a strong focus on dancing, the company is also investing on grand sets and costumes. According to them, ballet has come a long way and while its magic remains in graceful moves, visuals also play an important role. That’s what makes The Nutcracker a huge hit with the patrons and why the “Coppélia” shined with its luxurious trappings.
The Nutcracker
Outpouring of support and huge demand for Cleveland Ballet tickets prompted additional shows of The Nutcracker. Appealing to audiences of all groups, Cleveland Ballet’s The Nutcracker is enchanting, magical and completely captivating.
Unlike other productions, the main lead on this version is named Caroline instead of Cara. The story is the same, drawn from E.T.A. Hoffman’s “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. Engaging more than 100 singers and dancers, everyone works together to bring magic on stage. There are flower gardens, snow storms, world of battles and candy land.
The Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe and costume designers Marie Quintana and Irina Mochalova recently revamped the ballet, creating new costumes for the waltz of flowers. There have also been some changes in the scenic design, as more realistic alterations have been made to enhance the visual beauty of the show. A delight for the eyes, The Nutcracker by the Cleveland Ballet makes your heart soar.
Coppélia –
In 2016, Cleveland Ballet premiered “Coppélia” and it was definitely a fresh version of the classic. Spanish choreographer Ramon Oller was roped in by Gladisa Guadalupe who was known for blending classical and neo-classical with modern dance. Redefining the ballet’s essence, the duo extracted 70-minute worth of presentation from the original lengthy version and highlighted human relationships.
Lavish period costumes and set pieces fill the stage with artistry. Oller’s choreography beautifully balances modern style with classical ballet and physical humor. Coppélia will start its run in April 2019 and with it the company has big plans of taking innovation to a new level.
