From Texas premier to D.C.
Freedom’s Song had its world premiere in Houston, Texas, at the Alley Theatre in fall 1998. Back then, it was bannered under the title The Civil War.
By the spring of next year, it opened at the St. James Theatre on Broadway. This is where it received critical acclaim and appreciation by the audience of all ages for its historic exploration.
At the turn of the millennium, The Civil War went on a US wide tour. It was renamed, For the Glory: The Civil War Musical in Gettysburg for performances at the Majestic Theatre in Pennsylvania. Just before its current reiteration, it premiered at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. in 2009.
A glimpse into history with music
Over the years, Freedom’s Song has garnered widespread positive reviews for its reinvigoration of the nation’s proud history and moments. The musical was reworked to cut down on the number of actors and now one actor plays three to four different characters. The costumes, scenery, set and language have been given extra detail to keep them authentic.
The show also includes a list of hit musical numbers that have been penned down by Frank Wildhorn. Some of these include “Freedom’s Child”, “The Honor of Your Name”, “Candle in the Window” and “Brother, My Brother” among others. This musical is a beautiful example of an amalgamation of rhythm & blues, rock, country, folk and gospel music.
The stories of common man and Honest Abe’s speeches
The musical features historical speeches of Abraham Lincoln. Along with Honest Abe, the Confederate Sergeant and the Union Private bring to stage their own versions of the Civil War. Apart from them, the show also introduces the audience to a new arrangement of common folk.
As the musical opens, The Storyteller of the modern times begins to narrate the events that cause, fueled and eventually ended the American Civil War. Stories of slaves, housekeepers, abolitionists and soldiers on both sides are presented with accurate facts but in a fictionalized tone.
