The dawn of Cirque Du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil was created by Gilles Ste-Croix and Guy Laliberté. The idea was planted when Laliberté helped Ste-Croix and Daniel Gauthier set up a fair in Baie-Saint-Paul. At the time, the two were running a youth hostel that focused on performing artists called Le Balcon Vert. Ste-Croix then decided to turn the Balcon Vert into a performing troupe in 1979. To bring this idea to life, Gilles Ste-Croix walked to Quebec City on stilts, which convinced the government to fund the production. This led to the creation of Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul. A year later, Les Échassiers was seen touring Quebec.
Les Échassiers received acclaim from both critics and audiences, but it failed to produce the expected financial results. Not wanting to give up, the trio took Les Échassiers on tour again and this time, the show managed to break even, which encouraged Ste-Croix and Laliberté to hold a fair, La Fête Foraine, in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1982. The touring festival was a huge hit. Due to its success, the Quebec government later gave Laliberté a one and a half million dollar grant to put together a production to celebrate Quebec’s 450th anniversary, resulting in ‘Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil.’
Cirque du Soleil was initially intended to be a one year project, but the show quickly became very popular. This motivated Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix to continue working on the production, eventually turning it into a proper circus. Today, Cirque du Soleil has transformed into a multi-million dollar company, employing more than five thousand people from different parts of the world. It has also been honored with the National Arts Centre Award and has its own star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.
