Cirque du Soleil; An Introduction

Cirque du Soleil is a Montreal-based entertainment company formed by Guy Laliberte in 1984. Dropping out of college in 1979, Laliberte decided to learn the daring art of breathing fire. He was soon helping performing arts enthusiasts Gilles Ste-Croix and Daniel Gauthier to organize fairs and gather funds to create a touring show. Named ‘Les Echassiers,’ the show was not a financial success but managed to break even. In 1982, Laliberte created a show named ‘Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil’ after being provided with a $1.5 million grant from the government. The show was a success with performances held across 11 towns for 13 consecutive weeks.
