Chicago production and the creative team
The play Churchill saw its first production in Chicago, Illinois, at The Greenhouse Theatre Center. It is a one-man show that has been steered into a stage reality by the brilliance of a veteran actor Ronald Keaton. The founder of the Solo Chicago Theatre adapted the life and times of the famous British Prime Minister soon after the Second World War ended. Keaton acts as the titular character in a performance remembered by audiences of all ages and interests. The rest of the four-member creative crew includes Kurt Johns as the director and Jason Epperson as the set and lighting designer. Paul Deziel and Eric Backus serve as the projection and sound designer, respectively.
Winston Churchill: the man himself
Sir Winston Churchill is undoubtedly one of the most prominent political figures in the history of the modern world. Born an aristocrat, he left a long lasting impression on the British politics. He was a British Army officer, an artist, a writer and a historian. He was decorated with numerous titles, orders and knighthood. His prowess over foreign relations, state affairs and defense strategies alongside his intellect and charisma helped UK win both the First and the Second World Wars. He was loved and admired by the Americans as well who made him their first ever honorary citizen. This Nobel Literature Prize winner died at the age of ninety.
The “Iron Curtain” speech
The play chronicles the post-WWII time when Churchill lost the reelection for Prime Minister despite being a celebrated wartime hero. Residing in his Chartwell home with wife Clementine, he is invited by the American President, Harry Truman. The invitation was to speak at the Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. After receiving an informal and warm welcome, Churchill delivers his epic and historical speech. This speech changed the relations of the two superpowers for times to come. Churchill’s popularity in the US multiplied tenfold where he is still regarded as one of the most celebrated political figures of all time.
