The Rat Pack was a popular group of actors and performers, active mostly during the 1960s. The group first came into being as an informal collection of friends that was "led" by Humphrey Bogart. Many of his friends and colleagues were considered members of the Rat Pack, which featured a revolving door of performers. Starting from the mid-1960, however, the group’s name became the collective public moniker of Frank Sinatra, Pete Lawford, Joey Bishop and Sammy Davis Jr, as used by the press.
This version of the group, so to speak, was an offshoot of the one created by Bogart. And just like Bogart’s group, all four men of the latter Rat Pack were actors and singers and appeared together in both films – the most notable of which was Ocean’s 11 – as well as stage productions. However, unlike Bogart’s group, the members of the "new" one never referred to themselves as the Rat Pack, instead preferring to alternate between the names "the Summit" and "the Clan." Nevertheless, the Rat Pack is what the men have been immortalized as.
Throughout their career, the Rat Pack released a number of hit songs and albums, not least of which were their numerous Christmas-related songs. Among the latter were Frank Sinatra’s "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and "Mistletoe and Holly." Others included Dean Martin’s "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" and ""Peace on Earth/Silent Night." Sammy Davis Jr.’s hits included the likes of "Christmas Time All Over the World" and "The Christmas Song."
The band became a fixture of modern pop culture and then veritable icons within it. They were known for their style and glamor and were a favorite of both male and female audiences. As a tribute to the band, The Rat Pack – Live from Las Vegas was created in the early 2000s. Celebrating the work of the late artists, the show featured talented singers who would impersonate each member of the Rat Pack and performed the group’s biggest hits. It recreates the music as well as the environment and ambiance of what a regular night at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas – where members of the Rat pack made frequent live appearances - would be like during the 1960s.
The show was directed by Mitch Sebastian, who also provided the choreography. Vocal and music supervision were the purview of Matthew freeman, whilst Derek Nicol and Paul Walden produced the act. Set design was by Sean Cavanagh, costume design was by Christopher Woods and wig design was by Joanna Taylor. Also featured in The Rat Pack – Live from Las Vegas were the renowned Burelli Sisters - who acted as the back-up vocalists – accompanied by a full fifteen-piece orchestra that faithfully reproduced the music of the Rat Pack.
The production was a huge success and toured all over the United States as well as in the U.K, where it was nominated for a Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment.
Prompted by the show’s success, the creators of The Rat Pack – Live from Las Vegas turned it into Christmas with The Rat Pack , a seasonal variation of the show tailor-made for Christmas. As such, the production crew as well as the cast of this version of the show was identical to The Rat Pack – Live from Las Vegas. It only differed in the songs that were performed.
Christmas with The Rat Pack was also a huge success with a audiences and critics, the latter of whom praised the cast for their spot-on mimicry as well as their performances. The upcoming performances are sure to be equally good. Christmas with The Rat Pack tickets are now up for grabs.
