After decorating the Christmas tree the children are sent to bed including Fritz and his sister Clara. The children are surprised to see the way the tree sparkles and as the clock strikes eight Herr Drosselmeyer enters the house with presents for the children. He is a councilman and also a toymaker and is well known for being a toymaker. He brought four dolls for the children who look very real. These dolls are called Columbine, Harlequin, Soldier and Vivandiere. The special thing about these dolls is that they can dance like real people and are capable of providing entertainment to everyone around.

Along with these dolls he has also brought a nutcracker that is made of wood and carved like a little man. Clara immediately develops a liking for this nutcracker but Fritz who is equally excited to see this toy tries to break a walnut with it and ends up breaking it. Clara feels extremely dejected and takes this wooden toy to bed and lulls it to sleep. During the night she wakes up to see the condition of the nutcracker but when she reaches the room the clock strikes midnight the room I filled with mice and the tree grows tremendously. The whole atmosphere of the room changes into a war zone. The nutcracker increases in size as well and there seems to be fight between the gingerbread soldiers and the mice. The mice are supervised by the mouse king and they start devouring the gingerbread soldiers. Later on the nutcracker enters the fight to help the gingerbread soldiers and is accompanied by the tin soldiers. Clara in an attempt to help the nutcracker chases away the mouse king and his army. California Ballet the Nutcracker season draws inspiration from the 1819 story of E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It is a fairytale where the childhood fantasies collide with the fears and evils of the threatening world. The choreographer, Maxine Mahon has created Clara as a pre teen character who has started to daydream about love. She has a desire to become a grown up lady and waits for the day when her prince would come and take her along. The dark side of the picture reveals that she cannot achieve her goal easily as the world around her is not so pleasant. Therefore, to Clara, the shortcut to this happiness is dreaming and fantasizing about her nutcracker prince.
