The Roundabout Theater Company announced in 2013 that it was planning to revive Cabaret for the 2014 season and stage it in New York’s Studio 54. This became the musical’s third Broadway revival and was directed by Sam Mendes and co-directed by Rob Marshall.
Synopsis
The musical is set in 1931 in Berlin. This was the time that the Nazis were ascending to power in the country and the musical highlights the problems which had begun arising in the country as a result. The main plot of the story revolves around the night life at the Kit Kat Klub and the relationship between one of its cabaret dancers, Sally Bowles and an American author, Cliff Bradshaw.
The musical’s subplot revolves around the doomed love story between an elderly Jewish fruit vendor and a German woman, Fraulein Schneider. The action in the musical is overseen by the Master of Ceremonies at the club, who also functions as the narrator. The seedy nightlife at the Kit Kat Klub is a metaphorical representation of the political upheaval taking place in Germany at that time.

The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards including the awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score.
