The grand holiday tradition continues at the Clowes Memorial Hall as Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker raises it curtains at the theatre. The brilliance and richness of Tchaikovsky’s music is presented on stage by the Butler Ballet Orchestra. Indianapolis Children’s Choir also shines under the direction of Richard Auldon Clark. Through glorious scenery, beautiful costumes and spectacular choreography the classic holiday tale is brought to life, rekindling the spirit of Christmas in everyone. Butler Ballet’s 34th annual production of The Nutcracker is scheduled from December 1 – 4, 2016 at the Clowes Memorial Hall. The famed ballet company has complete control over the production as the choreography is handled by the Butler dance faculty and music is performed by the Butler Symphony Orchestra. Under the direction of music professor Richard Auldon Clark, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and Students of the Butler Department of Dance perform the astounding music. Butler Ballet Spreads Holiday Magic With The Nutcracker
A bold combination of modern dance and classical ballet, Richard Auldon Clark’s The Butler Ballet Orchestra always brings spark to The Nutcracker production. In its 34th year, the show has become a regular fixture during the holiday season.
The show opens with young Clara celebrating Christmas with her family and house guests. She’s eagerly waiting for her toysmith uncle, Dr. Drosselmeyer, who always brings the most unique gifts for her. He gifts Clara a nutcracker and she likes it so much that when everyone goes to sleep, she sneaks into the family room and sleeps under the Christmas tree, holding the nutcracker in her hand.
At midnight some magic happens and Clara is transported into another world, where all of her toys come alive. The nutcracker turns into a handsome prince and he fights an army of mice. Through some exquisite choreography that includes solo, duet and corps dancing, the characters bring to life different interactions and relationships. The famous sequences in which Clara travels to the “Kingdom of Sweets” and into the “Kingdom of Snow” are presented through majestic dancing. It leads into the ethnic and cultural entertainment as each dancing style represents a country. The dancers representing Arabia create sensuous dance movements that are elegant and full of style. The whimsical Chinese act takes your breath away and the Russian dancer’s flexibility and athleticism is a sight to behold.
The final segment begins with the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her cavalier. The audience watches in awe as they bend, lift, twist and jump, showcasing grace, fluidity and perfection.

The ingenuity in presentation, brand new sets and beautiful costumes keep the freshness alive in The Nutcracker. Butler dance faculty continues to add new routines in choreography and even the dancers are changed from time to time. Clara’s dream is brought to life through lavish stage design, special effects and lighting. The ‘Snow Scene’ is executed brilliantly as the perfectly paired Snow Queen and Snow King deliver a magically powerful performance. A wow factor is created through the snow falling on the cast and the entire scene in breathtaking. The colorful hot air balloon, as well as the vibrant and festive tones enhances the visual appeal to the Butler Ballet’s production.
