Just when the adventures of Eugene and his brother Stanley couldn’t get any better, a new adventure story was added and was made a trilogy. Soon it was turned in to a theater play and the fun was made two fold. Broadway Bound is the third part in the Eugene trilogy, the first two being ‘Biloxi Blues’ and ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’. It was in December 1986 that Broadway was given another play and it was Broadway Bound. It was opened at the Broadthurst Theatre where it ran for a total of 756 performances before closing. The play was produced by Emanuel Azenberg and the direction was given by Gene Saks. The play got positive reviews from the critics and has its own special position in Broadway. The original Broadway production starred Jonathan Silverman as Eugene, Jason Alexander as Stanley, Linda Lavin as Kate and Phyllis Newman as Blanche. The play won no less than seven nominations for Tony Award and won the award of Best Actress in a Play and Best Featured Actor in a play and proved that it is in the running for winning the most prestigious theater awards. Moreover, Broadway Bound also won two Drama Desk Awards among the four nominations. The play was also nominated for Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1987.
The popularity of the show was such that it was adapted for a television movie in 1992 which starred Hume Cronyn and Anne Bancroft. The Broadway revival of the play was cancelled in 2009 after its predecessor, Brighton Beach Memoirs, didn’t make good sales. Broadway Bound revolves around the lives of two brothers, Eugene and Stanley, who are struggling to make a name in radio and television by writing comedy while they also have to cope with their family which is falling apart as their parents are going for a divorce. Their father, Jack, is having an affair with another woman of which the sons are aware of. While they keep trying for their career, they also try to prepare their mother Kate for the eventual divorce. When their comedy play gets on air, their father notices striking similarities between the fictional families the two brothers have used in their writing and their own. Their father is outraged and it leads to a heated argument between Jack and Stanley in which his affair is brought out on the open as well. Eventually, Jack leaves, the two brothers get offers they have been wanting and go for it while their mother starts living with her father.
