Simon established his refuge from these hardships by enjoying theatrical presentations, mainly of Charlie Chaplin, which the writer states was his major inspiration. After completing his education from the Army Air Force Reserve, Simon started creating his own works that were soon taken on by several radio and television channels for their shows. Some of these shows include "Your Show of Shows" and "The Phil Silvers Show". The debut play that the writer wrote came forward in 1961 and was named Come Blow Your Horn that ran for a total of seven hundred shows on Broadway.

As Eugene grows to the age of twenty, an unexpected event occurs as the young boy gets drafted into the United States’ American Army in order to fight in the Second World War where he learns to live the life of a soldier, meets his comrades, falls in love, makes mistakes and lives anything but a boring life.
