With music, lyrics and book by Jim Steinman, the musical Bat Out of Hell is set in a post-cataclysmic city Obsidian. It revolves around a forbidden love between Strat, a young leader of The Lost and Raven, who is the daughter of Obsidian’s tyrannical ruler Falco. Directed by Jay Scheib, the musical features choreography by Emma Portner and Jon Bausor as the set designer. Meat Loaf and songwriter Jim Steinman joined forces forty years ago to create a rock musical. Loosely based on Peter Pan, the musical was originally called Neverland but it couldn’t become anything more than a work in progress. It did however become one of the greatest albums of all time. Knowing the songs they composed had potential in them, Meat Loaf and Steinman turned them into an album and it cemented their names in music history.
The musical is finally on stage, featuring classic anthems and rock numbers like “I Would Do Anything for Love” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”. Premiering in February 2017 at the Manchester Opera House, Bat Out of Hell is driven by its bombastic album. The plot lacks depth but in the end, it’s a pure guilty pleasure.
Raven, comes from a privileged background and falls in love with the immortal Strat. Jim Steinman has related Strat’s immortality with the timeless appeal of rock n roll and how it remains relevant forever. The three-hour long show is set in a post-apocalyptic world plagued by war. Bat Out of Hell – Feast for the Ears & Eyes
What makes the musical enjoyable and fan-pleasing is the multi-layered, lavish set design by Jon Bausor. Designed to complement the songs, he has used water features, falling cars and striking video projections. Andrew Polec as Strat and Christina Bennington as Raven bring energy to the stage, performing the songs with their youthful rawness. They dominate the musical with their powerful vocals and showing incredible chemistry in the duets.
Rob Fowler plays Falco, the ruler of Obsidian and Sharon Sexton steps in as his romantic partner Sloane. The vocally dynamic and challenging score is handled brilliantly by the ensemble cast as they effortlessly perform with emotion and power. The lighthearted musical is more on the lines of Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia!, using the songs to layout the story.
Critics have given it a thumbs up, urging the theatergoers to watch it while they still can. Bat Out of Hell is so far a limited engagement and will run for short intervals in London and Toronto. Much praise is for the staggering stage production and set as the creative team has raised the bar with this one. Reviewed as a jaw-dropping spectacle, it’s among the few shows that received a standing ovation at the interval. Make sure you catch it when it comes to your city.
