A Rich History

It is hard to imagine that a ballet which was originally rejected by critics now enjoys a universal appeal. The Nutcracker has been performed all over the world by different schools and productions and has seen many variations over the years.

The story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King was penned down by German writer, Ernst Theador Amadeus Hoffman. It first appeared in 1816 in a book of short stories.

After almost thirty years, it made its ballet debut in 1892, at the Mariinsky Theatre, in St Petersburg, Russia. It was choreographed by the renowned ballet masters Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa but the ballet was rejected by critics. It received very harsh reviews and was dropped after only fourteen performances.

It was in the 60’s that the Nutcracker became a holiday tradition and today it is one of the most popular ballets of all time. Tchaikovsky never lived to see the success the ballet and the music later enjoyed. His score is one of the most appreciated and still lives on.
