- The Nutcracker ballet is more than 100 years old and has rich Russian roots. In 1892, the first production was held by the Moscow Ballet at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre. The “father of Russian ballet”, Marius Petipa was behind the original choreography.
- The original version of The Nutcracker story by E.T.A. Hoffman (The Nutcracker and The Mouse King), the leading lady’s name was Marie. When writer Alexandre Dumas adapted the story, he changed it to Clara. Eventually the naming contest was won by Clara and it has been the main protagonist’s name since.
- The very first costumes of The Nutcracker were designed by Ivan Vscvolozhsky, who beautifully added the holiday-meets-sweets appeal to the show. He laid the foundation for gorgeous tutus and Sugar Plum Fairy that have become an important part of the ballet.
