In order to ensure perfection of the stage representation of the ballet, an elaborate research is conducted for its costumes before every performance. For one of its recent productions, designer Jana Moore researched the costume collections of the 19th century at The Victoria and Albert Museum and New York Metropolitan Museum of Art to know the history of fashion and then designed tutus. Careful study before every ballet helps in customization of the props and the stage setting according to the host region.
In the NYCB production of the ballet, the dewdrop costume was bejeweled with 65 dewdrops of crystal; Sugar Plum Fairy’s costume had seven layers of tulle and Mother Ginger’s skirt rested on a metal frame weighing 40 pounds. Likewise, in Alabama’s production, tutus for 14 flowers were created with 700 yards of fabric. Each production since its first one in 1944 has had a special feature that has made its popular in its era. The ballet’s fame has successfully travelled through generations and today it has achieved the status of being a Christmas Special Show.
When it comes to music, it is the original scores of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky that add grace to the story. Songs like Miniature Overture, March, Waltz of the Snowflakes have been very popular throughout its productions that have complimented well with the dance moves of the artists.
