Stephen Mills – Artistic Director

Mills inaugural season with Ballet Austin was in 2000 and since then he has proven himself to be a world-class choreographer. An innovator no doubt, his choreography is sleek and sophisticated.

Interested in music as a child, Mills excelled in drama and ended up getting a college scholarship in theater. He was 18 when he attended a ballet class for the first time and according to him, it was the most liberating and physically engaging experience of his life. Studying ballet in all its modern forms – jazz, African dance and tap, Stephen Mills explored the diverse field, evolving with every new find.

His first commissioned work was with Ballet Austin in which he used the music from the film “Powaqqatsi”, composed by Philip Glass. The production was such a huge hit that after some invitations to make more work for them, he was officially hired as the Artistic Director.

He gives a beautiful advice to aspiring choreographers, “Art has always been a reflection of the time and culture in which it’s made. I don’t think there is a right or wrong direction; it can’t be controlled anyway.”

56th Annual Production of The Nutcracker

Ballet Austin under the direction of Stephen Mills gave The Nutcracker a makeover during its 51st season. The modifications continue after being a huge hit with the audience.

The new sets and costumes came as breath of fresh air, renewing the spirit and sense of commitment to the classic holiday tradition. Since then Ballet Austin tickets have soared in sales as the audience get to experience a stunning spectacle. Holly Highfill serves as the scenic designer, having worked on the grand party scene in the Act I, and also on the rats and soldiers battle. In the Act II, she shows her creativity during the Land of Sweets segment, thus providing the visual elements that give The Nutcracker its new sheen.

Among the highlights of this new production is the Christmas tree. As Clara shrinks to toy size, the tree continues to grow and at one point even the audience find themselves under the canopy of tree branches. In a darkened hall with the Christmas tree lights twinkling, you can’t help but feel the joy and serenity of the holiday season.

With plenty of traditional in place, Ballet Austin’s Nutcracker is a welcome fresh of a timeless classic.
