Through the decades, the opera has brought some of the most memorable performances to the live stage. It features the finest musicians of the area and gives the youth chance to present their fresh talent on the stage. Since Atlanta Opera is in its brand new season, you can attend a show with your Atlanta Opera tickets.
Atlanta has opera in its roots. The earlier exposure to this mesmerizing genre of music was during early 1900s, when a week long Metropolitan Opera tour landed in Atlanta. The tour performed at Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center, Fox Theatre and Auditorium-Armory, and by the end, it had become a major event of the week. People poured in numbers to attend these live classical performances, for the very first time revealing the locals love for the genre. The Metropolitan Opera tour was a big success, mainly because of these successful performances.
All through the week, a different opera production starring legends like Marian Anderson, Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti were held. The audience consisted of people of all age groups, from teenagers to adults. A big void engulfed the theatres of Atlanta when Metropolitan Opera stopped touring the region during the 70s. In order to continue opera within Atlanta, civic leaders as well as a number of volunteers got together. As a combined effort, The Atlantic Civic Opera was founded in 1979, when two companies, Georgia Opera and Atlanta Lyric Opera merged. The very first composer to take over the company was Thomas Pasatieri. The name of the company was changed to Atlanta Opera six years later.
Atlanta Opera staged its very first performance, La Traviata in the March of 1980 at Fox Theatre. It was followed by the very first festive gala in December the same year, which took place in Symphony Hall and included young talented musicians such as Jerry Hadley, Catherine Malfitano and Samuel Ramey. Atlanta Opera has gradually become a thriving part of the city’s growth, especially in the field of music and has groomed some of the finest international level artists.
Atlanta Opera celebrated thirtieth anniversary in its 2002-10 season. Atlanta Opera is famous for its Atlanta Opera Chorus, which has been performing under Walter Huff, the chorus master since 1988. It is well known for having some of the most skilled and trained singers. The chorus has presented the classic as well as upbeat and more modern operas like The Flying Dutchman by Wagner, Akhnaten by Philip Glass and Orfeo and Eurdice by Gluck. During the Centennial Olympic Games of 1996, the Atlantic Opera Chorus performed Of Thee I Sing of Gershwin. Apart from that the chorus has presented several other famous performances as well.
Atlanta Opera Chorus performed in Paris’ Opera Comique in 2008, in production of Porgy and Bess. That same year, Huff celebrated two decades with the company. By 2009, Opera’s audiences were noted to have increased sixty percent after the completion of two seasons in the new avenue, Cobb Energy Center. The opera is still primarily performing at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. The venue is located in Galleria edge city, lying northwest of Atlanta. Now Atlanta Opera is entering its brand new season and a number of performances are lined up. If you wish to attend one of their shows this year, now the Atlanta Opera tickets are up for sale.
