The main plot of the musical is based on a famous comic strip by Harold Gray called the Little Orphan Annie. Bearing the music coming from Charles Strouse and lyrics being written by Martin Charnin, Annie the musical made it to the Broadway at the Alvin Theatre in 1977 after its pre-Broadway tryouts. After premiering on Broadway, the musical garnered positive reception from both critics and patrons. The fame of the musical paved way for several other major productions, as well as national touring productions. Due to the immense popularity of the musical, it kept on running at the Alvin Theatre for more than six years, making it the longest running musical in the history of the Alvin Theatre, which is currently known as the Neil Simon Theatre.

Before making it big on the Alvin Theatre, the musical initially made its global premiere at the Goodspeed Opera House located in East Haddam. And after that it made it to the Alvin Theatre. The original production of the musical was nominated for an amazing eleven Tony Awards, and managed to win seven including an award for the category of Best Musical.
