Annie’s Production History
Annie, the musical made its premiere in August, 1976 at the grand Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. It was directed by Michael P. Price and featured Andrea McArdle playing the lead role of Annie. The Broadway premiere took place in April, 1977 at the Alvin Theatre. It received major critical acclaim and closed in January, 1983 with a total of 2377 shows. With this it established the record of the longest running production at the theatre up till 2009 (musical ‘Hairspray’ surpassed Annie’s record).
Award Wins & Nominations
The first Broadway run resulted in Annie being nominated for 11 Tony Awards. It won 7 Awards from the categories of ‘Best Book’, ‘Best Score’, ‘Best Choreography’ and ‘Best Musical’. It also claimed 7 Drama Desk Awards in 1977 out of 9 nominations. Others achievements include, the 1997 Broadway revival being nominated for ‘Best Revival of a Musical’ Tony Award and the 1998 London revival receiving nomination for ‘Best Theatre Choreographer’ Laurence Olivier Award.
