The Story
This musical shifts the story of the animated version to make it more dynamic and realistic. Instead of the evil sorcerer Rasputin, a soldier named Gleb is set at Anastasia’s heel. Dmitry may live up to the childhood crushes on the character’s animated version, but he is flawed and dynamic, a real breathing person in every aspect. Anya is Anna, a young girl who has taken on the courageous decision to find “home, love, family”. These three are accompanied by numerous other characters that help in recounting this extraordinary tale about love, loss and redemption. Based on a combination of the plots of the Ingrid Berman film as well as the animated version, the musical is an exclusively new storyline, which remains true to this magical journey to the past.
The Production
The Broadhurst Theatre production of “Anastasia” features a book by Terence McNally and Music and Lyrics by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. No one else seems more fitting to give Anastasia the stage treatment than the composers of the original score, and therefore Flaherty and Ahrens have given this production their seal of approval and royal treatment. Directed by Darko Tresnjak and choreographed to perfection by Peggy Hickey, “Anastasia’s” visual appeal is at a high as well.
The cast and crew have been gaining rave reviews over the show’s run, and you should purchase your Anastasia New York tickets while you have the chance!
