American Psycho is a musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s famous 1991 novel of the same name. Set in Manhattan, the story revolves around mysterious psychopath Patrick Bateman and highlights his day to day routine, which also includes cold blooded murder. The musical first opened in London in 2013 to excellent reviews and is now coming to Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. American Psycho became an instant hit with the public and critics alike after its release in 1991. The story’s dark subject matter and style of narrative made it an instant best seller. The 2000 movie adaptation, which featured Christian Bale in the titular role, was also a huge success and introduced the story to a much wider audience.
Background
In 2008, producers Jesse Singer, David Johnson, Aaron Ray and Nate Bolotin decided to purchase the stage rights for American Psycho and adapt the story into a musical for Broadway. By 2010, award winning songwriter Duncan Sheikh had been hired to write the music and lyrics for the production, and playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had been hired to write the book for the musical.
It was announced in April 2012 that the musical would premier in London and would be staged by the theater company, Headlong. Matt Smith, famous for portraying the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who was cast in the lead role as Patrick Bateman.
London Run
American Psycho opened for previews at the Almeida Theater in London on December 3, 2013. After almost two weeks of previews, the musical officially opened on December 12th and was initially supposed to run till January 25th. However, excellent reviews meant that the show’s engagement was extended by a week till February 1st.
The book for the musical was credited to Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, while the music and lyrics were attributed to Duncan Sheik. Veteran director Rupert Goold directed the production, while famous designer Es Devlin carried out the set designs. Lynne Page choreographed the musical, with Jon Clark doing the lightning design and Paul Arditti doing the sound design. Katrina Lindsay did costume designs for the production and David Shrubsole was credited with its musical direction.
Notable members of the cast included Matt Smith, Susannah Fielding, Jonathan Bailey, Ben Aldridge and Lucie Jones.
Move to Broadway
After its successful run in London, the musical is now being adapted for a Broadway run. After the play’s premier in London, a production workshop was held in New York in January 2015 and it was announced that the show would be staged on Broadway in March 2016.
It was later confirmed that Benjamin Walker had been cast in the lead role - Walker had recently became a well known face after the success of his movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre was selected to stage the production and it was announced that previews would start on March 24, 2016.
The production crew for the Broadway version is a little different, with Dan Moses Schreier handling the sound design and Justin Townsend doing the lighting design for the production.
Apart from Walker, other actors who joined the cast were Tony winner Alice Ripley, Tony nominee Jennifer Damiano and Helene Yorke.
Reception
The musical has been received quite well by critics and is fast becoming a fan favorite. The opening shows were sold out immediately, since people want to watch a reimagining of the original, gruesome tale.
The musical has already been nominated for two Tony Awards and eight Drama Desk Awards, including the Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Actor in a Musical.” The results of both awards will be announced at the end of the theater season.
American Psycho is one of the most popular shows currently running on Broadway and its haunting, gripping story is a must watch for all theater aficionados. To watch the musical live, get your American Psycho tickets today.
