This began what they company refers to now as the "station wagon tours", in 1960 and became the resident dance company for 51st Street YWCA's Clark Center for the Performing Arts. This is the time period where the astounding piece Revelations was produced by the company.Since then, through financial issues and even the death of founder, Alvin Ailey, as well as much relocation, the company has stood steadfast, and the quality and respect for their work has only improved. In 1962, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was chosen to tour the far east as part of President John F. Kennedy’s progressive "President’s Special International Program for Cultural Presentations." This was an effort to promote artistic dialogue with other nations that have in themselves their own intrinsic artistic values and aesthetics and also to expose more people to different forms of performance art that they may not have had access to otherwise. In 1963, they got the chance to further their already growing international popularity by being invited to perform at the Rio de Janeiro International Arts Festival. They followed that up with a performance at the first Negro Arts Festival in Dakar, Senegal, which in itself, the existence of such an event, was historic. In 1968, the company was invited to perform at the White House which is also obviously a great honor. In 1970, the company went further on to perform in the USSR, becoming one of the first American modern dance companies to do so. In 1977, the company yet again performed for the president, then Jimmy Carter for his inaugural.As one can tell, the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Company really has come a long way from being just a group of thirty visionary dancers. Setting yet another historical record, the AAADT also was the first modern dance company to perform in China in 1985. The company has also received the greatest award in modern dance, Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award, as well as The Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Contribution to American Culture award, both of which are obviously very prestigious titles. Since the 2000s, the company has made an even bigger impact in dance internationally by first, creating a specifically commissioned Ballet for 2002 Olympic Arts Festival, and then having a US postage stamp also issued in their honor!
