Altar Boyz is a comedy musical by Michael Patrick Walker and Gary Adler. The book was penned by Kevin Del Aguila that was based originally on idea by Ken Davenport and Marc Kessler. The story of the musical is about a boy band. It satirizes the fame of Christian songs and boy bands within America. The first production of Altar Boyz was choreographed by Christopher Gattelli with the direction by Stafford Arima. The show made its debut in September of 2004 at the 47th Street Theatre. The cast included Ryan Duncan, Tyler Maynard, Cheyenne Jackson, Andy Karl and David Josebsberg. The role of “G.O.D” was performed by Marc Kudisch. The initial staging of Altar Boyz was for a limited period of time. Off Broadway version of the show was then staged at Dodger Stages, 4 Doors in March of 2005 after about fifteen preview performances. The cast from the earlier production was brought back to stage, the only new actor being Scott Porter, who replaced Shadoe Stevens. This production ran for good five years, after about 2,030 performances it closed down. It is currently off-Broadway’s ninth longest running show ever
Altar Boyz is known for sinfully sharp comedy style, weird humor and a lot of dancing. The show is popular among the fans and critics and the songs are even played on channels such as MTV. Mathew, played by Michael Kadin Craig, is a guy who has chastity as his turn on, his favorite saint being St. Lilly of Colgate, the saint of winning piercing eyes and smiles. He is also a fan of nonfiction books. Mark, played by Travis Nesbit is a fan of St. Vidal of L’Oreal who is a saint of "Flexible Hold Hair Gel." He likes reality TV shows and antiques. Luke, played by Lee Markham is fan of saint of "Keeping it Real," St. Jerome the Awesome. His hobby is "confessing" his favorite biblical quote is "what is impossible with men is possible with God." – ‘Luke’ 18:27.
Juan, played by Mauricio Perez is a fan of St Ricardo de Martin, the saint of Orphans, specifically the ones left on the Church steps. He is searching for his parents, loves paintball and likes the Latin language. Abraham, played by Ravi Roth says his favorite color is Red, "like the sea," as he puts it. He is of the view that the first thing one should see in a girl is her Judaism.
Altar Boyz has run a number of productions, the touring production started in 2007 in the United States. It has toured to Korea, Finland, Hungary, Japan, Philippines and Australia. The musical has won a number of awards and recognitions, such as Outer Critics Circle Award for "Best Off-Broadway Musical." It is also winner of Theatre World Award and a Lucille Lortel Award for "Outstanding Musical."
