About Alcina
Alcina is based on the 1532 poem “Orlando Furioso” by Ludovico, though Handel changed things up a bit and took some liberties with it. He represents social issues and a sort of gender fluidity that is way ahead of his time. However, in the modern world, it seems fitting that such gender elements be focused on.
Synopsis of Alcina
The story of Alcina follows Melisso and Bradamante (who is in disguise as her brother Ricciardo), searching for her fiancé, Ruggiero desperately. Ruggiero has been charmed and lured in by the famous sorceress Alcina. The story takes an unexpected turn when the sorceress’ sister, Morgana, who also happens to be a sorceress, falls madly in love with Ricciardo and abandons her own love, Oronte for him. Ricciardo then pretends to also be in love with Morgana, just so that she can save herself. Morgana begins to believe that it is true love that Ricciardo feels for her, resulting in the joyous “Tornami a vagheggiar”.
On the other hand, the young Oberto is desperately searching for his father. But little does he know that his father has been turned into a vicious beast by Alcina. Poor Oberto spends the entire opera looking for his father, giving the storyline a higher sensitivity element.
Ruggiero finally comes to his senses, after Melisso places a magic on her finger to break the spell placed by Alcina. Soon, Ruggiero is reconciled with Bradamante and starts to plan an escape. After Alcina learns of this, she summons the spirits to halt Ruggiero’s plans, but does not succeed. Morgana reconciles with young Oronte, while Alcina’s rage is unleashed on Ruggiero.
Find out what happens next, who wins this battle and whether Ruggiero manages to escape or not, by getting your hands on these Alcina tickets.
The Ensemble of Alcina
The opera uses a very strong cast and crew in order to deliver a memorable performance. It is a mix of debut artists and SFO veterans that makes this storyline all the more intriguing. The title role is played by van den Heever, whose height is enough to intimidate mortals and lure them on to the island. Mack and Murrihy, in the roles of Bradamante and Ruggiero were perfectly matched for their roles. The steely voice of Murrihy, as opposed to the soft and luxurious sound of Mack fit phenomenally well into their defined roles.
Another role that truly inspires is the dramatic Anna Christy, with her cat-eye glasses and the usher’s uniform. She was feisty, sensitive and nerdy, all at the same time in her rendition of the character of Morgana. Jacquelyn Stucker also made quite an impression in the role of Oberto. Other cast members of note were Christian van Horn and Alek Shrader.
Reviews for Alcina
The reviews for Alcina are highly positive. Director Alden notes, “In our evolving era of gender fluidity Handel’s exploration of male and female role-playing is particularly striking … you almost need a scorecard to track the complications and gender-bending titillation.”
The director of media and public relations at SFO talks about the opera, “Alcina demands the audience’s attention with a mixture of expressive arias and sensual recitatives. “It’s a unique monkey dance,” he says. “Great baroque music and one of the most fun productions I’ve seen on this stage.”
The opera is all set to wow audiences this fall and winter. If you happen to be fan of true drama and good music, this is going to be very entertaining for you. The themes of passion, revenge and jealousy executed beautifully in Alcina will keep you glued to your seats throughout. Grab these Alcina tickets and don’t miss out!
