Broadway Celebrates Arthur Miller’s Themes of Revenge, Betrayal & Unthinkable Desire

In 2014, London enjoyed the grand revival of Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge” and after premiering to ecstatic reviews, the production was transferred to London’s West End. It ended up winning several 2015 Olivier Awards and The Guardian, The Evening Standard and The Independent called it the top theatre pick of the year. The Times Magazine named it “one of the best theatrical productions of the decade” and it was praised by The Financial Times in words, “searing, superb and triumphant”.

Centered on a dock worker’s family, the contemporary social tragedy explores their lives and relationships. Set in New York post war, Eddie Carbone lives with his wife Beatrice and an orphaned niece Catherine. The happy family shares intense love and a sense of commitment locks them together. Their stable lives suddenly rock when two cousins of Beatrice announce their arrival – illegal immigrants who challenge Eddie’s authority and disrupt his status quo. Tensions mount and violence beckons, and the audience are then treated to a chain of events told in flashbacks by a narrator Alfieri, who is an honest and unambitious lawyer.

The richly textured plot of “A View from the Bridge” underlies themes of personal politics, identity, the law and sexuality. Telling the story of ordinary people and their extraordinary lives, the play matches the context of Miller’s other popular concepts like Death of a Salesman, The Price, The Man Who Had All the Luck and All My Sons.

A Beautifully Designed, Strong & Compelling Production

Ivo van Hove who is known as a visionary director in the theatre world has taken the reigns in his hand and “A View from the Bridge” will mark his Broadway directorial debut. The Belgian director has been praised for his vital, visceral reinterpretation of the classic play and he has executed the forceful production with visual brilliance. Although there have been numerous productions of the acclaimed play, the creative team for Lincoln Center Theatre has outdone itself. The critics have called it an unforgettable experience and the performances are magnificent and astonishingly bold.

Featuring a talented cast, Mark Strong will reprise his role of Eddie Carbone and he will be hitting the Broadway stage fresh off winning the 2015 Olivier Award for the “Best Actor”. Nicola Walker will play Eddie’s wife Beatrice, Phoebe Fox will step into the shoes of Catherine and the cousins will be played by Emun Elliott (Marco) and Russell Tovey (Rodolpho). Ivo van Hove’s longtime collaborator Jan Versweyveld will take up the lighting and scenic design duty, costumes will be designed by An D'Huys and Tom Gibbons will be the sound designer.

A View from the Bridge tickets will treat you to an interesting set-up and Miller’s outstanding writing. Each scene is natural and compelling, complimented by some brilliant acting. It will keep you hooked to your seats but when the final curtain is drawn, you can’t help but give the team a standing ovation.
