A Doll’s House – The Original Story
A Doll's House first opened at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 1879. It was a three-act play that was published a month before it appeared on stage. The playwright, Henrik Ibsen, focused his storyline on breaking the norms of married life that were prevalent at the time, which is why the play stirred up quite a bit of controversy among various circles. The storyline was based on a true series of events that happened in the life of the author's friend, Laura, and her husband, Victor. Ibsen started thinking about the play sometime around May 1878 and labeled it as a "modern tragedy", stating that "a woman cannot be herself in modern society," as it is "an exclusively male society, with laws made by men and with prosecutors and judges who assess feminine conduct from a masculine standpoint."
