The Pac 12 is one of the oldest conferences in the country, having been established in 1915 as the Pacific Coast Conference. It consists of colleges from the western states of America. This conference is also widely known as the “Conference of Champions” as its members have managed to win the highest number of National titles in history, winning over four hundred to date.

It took quite a while for the Pac 12 to have a championship for women’s basketball. However in 1986 the first such game was held and USC were crowned the inaugural conference regular season champions. A winner was announced every year since then and in 2002 another competition was started, called the Pac 12 Conference Tournament Championship. This contest is one of the most exciting events in women’s basketball in the country and has been avidly followed by basketball fans everywhere.

The first tournament in 2002 was held at the McArthur Court in Oregon. Number three ranked Arizona State managed to get to the final against the formidable, number one ranked team from Stanford. Arizona ended the game with a shock victory over their strong opposition and became the first tournament champions in history. However Stanford made a strong comeback and managed to clinch the title the very next year. This was the beginning of a dominating run from Stanford in the competition that has resulted in them winning each edition of the tournament since, except for 2006 and 2014.

The final in the 2006 tournament featured number three ranked UCLA against the reigning champions Stanford. In a very close and exciting encounter, the team from Los Angeles emerged victorious after taking the game in to overtime. Last year Stanford was beaten in the semifinal by the fifth ranked team and eventual winners of the contest USC. They beat Oregon State in the final to be crowned the tournament champions.

The next tournament is scheduled to be held at the KeyArena in Seattle. This year, due to the increasing focus on women’s basketball all around the country, there will be added coverage provided for each game. The winner of the tournament will automatically qualify for the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship and get the opportunity to play for the national title.
