The Wisconsin Badgers are supervised by former head coach of the football team, Barry Alvarez, who is now the director. The team mascot is popularly known as "Bucky Badger", but its actual title is "Buckingham U. Badger". When lead miners arrived in Wisconsin in the 1820s and 1830s, the state was labeled the "Badger State" due to the miners having to seek shelter in burrowed tunnels in the hillsides, similar to badgers, in the absence of natural cover during the harsh winter season. The University of Wisconsin adopted the badger mascot in 1889. A strutting and scowling badger wearing a double-striped jersey was chosen as the emblem, which was designed in 1940 by Art Evans and revised in the early 2000s.

At the first few football games, a real badger was displayed, but it was too wild to be controlled, so it was sent to a nearby zoo. A live raccoon was also used to complement the team's image for a while. In 2006, the Mascot Hall of Fame's College Division inducted Bucky Badger.

The Wisconsin Badgers football program has been one of the most successful in the Big Ten since the early 1990s, when Barry Alvarez began serving as head coach. Under Alvarez, the Badgers won three Big Ten Championships and three Rose Bowls. In his last year with the team, 2005, the Badgers defeated the Auburn Tigers. Bret Bielema took over as head coach in 2006 and led the team to a 17-4 victory over Arkansas in the Capital One Bowl, as well as a 12-1 record. The Badgers have made fourteen bowl appearances in the past fifteen seasons, with a 10-10 record in bowl games. Two Heisman Trophy winners have also been involved in the Badger football program, running back Ron Dayne in 1999 and fullback Alan Ameche in 1954.

The home ground of the Wisconsin Badgers football team is Camp Randall Stadium, the fourth-oldest college football stadium in the country, built in 1917 and able to seat more than eighty thousand spectators. Camp Randall is renowned for its student section, which is considered one of the best in college football. The stadium features many exciting traditions, including "Jump Around", a House of Pain song played as part of a popular student celebration at the end of the third quarter of every home game. At the end of every game, the University's Marching Band performs its "Fifth Quarter".

The Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball team is on record as having a winning streak. They have succeeded in reaching the Final Four twice in their history; the first time was in 1941 and the most recent was in 2000. Seeing is believing! You should attend some of the sporting events at this university to experience the best there is. Don't miss out on Wisconsin Badgers tickets!
