One of the most dominant forces in the American Hockey League, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have got the bit between their teeth right now. They have been on the rise of late and are now among the most successful teams of recent years.

The History

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' history dates back to the year 1981 when they were known as the Fredericton Express. They were affiliates of the Vancouver Canucks and the Quebec Nordiques of the NHL. The Express even went to play in the Finals of the Calder Cup in the year 1988. Unfortunately, they came up short against the Hershey Bears on that occasion. It was their last season in the city and they made the move to Halifax to become the Halifax Citadels.

The Citadels became affiliates of the Nordiques and made two trips to the postseason. Their stay in the city ended in 1993 when they became the Cornwall Aces. They were affiliates of the Nordiques as well and won two division titles in Cornwall. They spent only three years in the city though and were affiliates of the Nordiques for the first two years and then moved to the Avalanche for the final year. The Aces folded in 1996 and as a result of that, stopped playing.

Resurrection

The Cleveland Lumberjacks used to play in the International Hockey League and were minor league affiliates of the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1990s. The IHL however decided to change its stature from a development league towards becoming an impendent league. The Penguins began to look for a very good minor league affiliate and that search led them to buying the inactive Cornwall Aces from their NHL counterparts, the Avalanche in the year 1996.

Although the Penguins had purchased the team, they did not resurrect it straight away and left it dormant all the way till the 1999-2000 campaign. The delay was because of construction issues at the team's proposed new home.

The Penguins Stars to Play

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins failed to make it to the postseason in their inaugural campaign but went all the way to the finals in the second year. They lost to the Saint John Flames 2-4. They have made it to the Calder Cup Finals twice since then but have come up short on both occasions. This is not to say, they have not won anything.

The Penguins won their first major title, the conference championship in the year 2001. That was followed by another conference crown in 2004. The Penguins then went on to win their first division title in 2006 and then did the conference and division double in 2008.

The Penguins’ wait to be crowned regular season champions came to an end in 2011 and they also won another division title that season. That trick was repeated in 2017 as well to put the Penguins among the ranks of the most successful sides in the AHL.

The Home Arena

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins play their home games at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. It has been home to the Penguins since the year 1999. The venue is one of the best of its kind in the US. It also holds the record for playing the most sellout AHL games in a single season. All forty Penguins games of the campaign were completely sold-out in the 2002-2003 and the 2003-2004 campaigns. The Mohegan Sun Arena also has the distinction of selling out an incredible ninety games straight for the period between March of 2002 and October of 2004.

Now the Penguins will be looking for support from their fans once again as they take another crack at winning the Calder Cup this year. If they are your side, then book your Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins tickets and get ready to root for them both home and away, live.
