Western Michigan Broncos were once called the Hilltoppers, which was a reference to the university’s location on the top of Propect Hill. The name was changed in 1939, when they were newly nicknamed the Broncos in order to avoid any confusion with other schools’ teams such as Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Assistant coach of the football team, John Gill who also served as their head coach later, coined the new nickname following the approval for name change, which was given by the athletic board of the school. In 2011, the Broncos commissioned Revera La Noue, the famous American artist, to create a sixty-five hundred square feet building wrap symbolically representing the athletic teams for the Art Prize competition of 2011. The Broncos president John Dunn has described this work of art to be one that captures the pride and history what it means to be a Bronco. The Broncos baseball team is particularly well reputed since it has been playing since 1911, and has appeared in College World Series as many as six times. In 1955, the team completed the NCAA as a runner-up. They have won fourteen Mi-American Conference championship, among which they won most between 1949 and 1967. Their men’s soccer team won most recently in 2003, bringing home the renowned MAC tournament championship. The Broncos’ men’s ice hockey team has won two CCHA tournament championships, winning the first one in 1986 and their second in 2012.
Western Michigan Broncos have won many non-varsity sports championships including the United States Collegiate Snowboard and Ski Association championship in 2005; American Collegiate Hockey Association Championship in Division II in 1996; National Intercollegiate Flying Association Championship in 1947, 1948, 1983, 1998 and 2002; and the U.S. Figure Skating Association Championship in 2004.
