The Washington Nationals trace their roots back to 1969. Formed as the Montreal Expos, they played under that name until 2004. After an unsuccessful contraction plan, the MLB bought the franchise and moved it to Washington.

As the Montreal Expos, they won only one division championship, but the move to Washington drastically changed their fortunes. The Nationals won four division titles between 2012 and 2017. Two years later, they clinched their maiden National League crown and put the icing on the cake by winning the World Series as well.

Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles remain fierce rivals of the Washington Nationals. Their series is known as the Beltway Series and it all began when the Montreal Expos relocated to the nation's capital to become the Washington Nationals. This meant that, for the first time in history, the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area had two professional baseball franchises. The fireworks were about to start.

The history between these two sides, however, goes back to June 16, 1997 when the Montreal Expos met the Orioles for the first time. The Expos won the game 6-4. These two teams have only met in regular season till now. The Orioles hold the lead in the head-to-head record. As of August 3, 2021, they have won fifty-four of the one hundred and one games played between them, while the Nationals have managed to record forty-seven victories.
