The Washington Capitals were formed in 1974 and are owned by Ted Leonsis, the former head of AOL. Before Leonsis' arrival, the team was owned by Abe Pollin, who also owned the NBA's Washington Bullets. The official colors of the Washington Capitals are red, navy, and white. They play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference and practice at the Verizon Center, which opened in 1997 at a cost of $270 million and is owned by Monumental Sports and Entertainment. It has a capacity of 18,277 seats for ice hockey games and is nicknamed "the Phone Booth" due to its association with telecommunications companies. Verizon Center is a favorite arena for ice hockey matches, especially those played by the Washington Capitals. The Washington Capitals are associated with the National Hockey League. Before moving to Verizon Center, the Washington Capitals used to practice at the Capital Center or the US Airways Arena. Initially, they were an expansion team for the 1974-75 season of the National Hockey League, with their counterparts being the Kansas City Scouts.

The Washington Capitals, known by their fans as "the Caps", have won one conference championship and six division league titles. Their biggest victory was the Stanley Cup Final of 1998, which was contested by the Western Conference champion, the Detroit Red Wings. It was the first entry of the Washington Capitals in the championship. The team is marked by the affiliation of celebrity players such as Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green, Alexander Semin, and Bruce Boudreau. Their best win was the President’s Trophy for 2009–2010.   The Washington Capitals, who started with an amalgamation of players with little professional experience, are now the home team for great players such as Eric Fehr, Nicklas Backstrom, Boyd Gordon, David Steckel, Jason Chimera in the forwards, Karl Alzner, Brian Fahey, Mike Green, and Tyler Sloan as defense, and Semyon Varlamov as the goalie. In its start, the Washington Capitals had to face a number of failures and disappointments against teams who were equipped with veteran players. They performed 8–67–5 in their first season, which was the worst record of the season. The team’s performance started getting better in the 1970s when coach Tom McVie was hired. Still, the team had to face losses until the 1980s when the Washington Capitals seriously started thinking of moving out of the capital.
The manager David Poile came as the saviour of the team in the 1980s. David traded Ryan Walter and Rick Green for Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis, and Craig Laughlin of the Montreal Canadiens. Langway dramatically reduced the goals against of the team, while Dennis Maruk, Mike Gartner, and Bobby Carpenter worked on the scoring side of the team. Consequently, the team jumped up to 29 points on the roster for ice hockey. The Capitals won games in the Eastern Conference series of 1997. During the same season, the players Oates, Phil Housley, and Dale Hunter scored their 1,000th point, a historic record for three players from the same team. The team won back-to-back games in 2000 and 2001 of the Southeast Division.

Some of the most famous Washington Capitals players are Nicklas Backstrom from Sweden, John Erskine from Canada, Tomas Fleischmann from the Czech Republic, Mike Knuble from America, Alexander Semin and Semyon Varlamov from Russia, and Scott Walker from Canada.
