The Hokies represent Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Atlantic Coast Conference of NCAA Division. The Hokies are waiting for their time to celebrate a national title yet. Currently, there are a total of 19 sports teams which represent the university in different competitions of college sports. The men's team include: cross country, football, swimming and diving, golf, basketball, wrestling, softball, track and field, basketball, soccer and tennis. Remaining 8 teams are women's squad for the games of basketball, lacrosse, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis, cross country, softball, track and field. The sports tradition has very deep roots in the soil of Virginia Techs; it has been well over a century that the institute is nurturing sports. From the year 1895 to 1921, the institute was member of the Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association. For the next approximately 45 years, Tech remained affiliated with the Southern Conference. In 1978, Virginia Techs joined the Metro Conference. The Hokies played in several other Conferences like Colonial Athletic Association, Big East Conference, Atlantic 10 Conference, Eastern Wrestling League, and Big East Conference and currently they participate in Atlantic Coast Conference. The teams official colors are burnt orange and Chicago maroon. The Hokie Bird's costume is of the same combination and he remembers the lyrics of Hokies fight song "Tech Triumph".
The maroon Hokie Bird with orange beak is among the top mascot of the college teams. Before the Bird, a costumed 7 feet tall "Fighting Gobbler" was the Tech mascot. In the 80sm the coaches and players realized he need of a new mascot for the team. A campaign was launched to figure out the new mascot and its name. Finally a turkey like figure commonly known as the Hokie, from the "Old Cheers", was finalized as the Tech's official mascot. The Hokei Bird has won many national titles and mascot competitions; he is part of the Animal Plant's special Thanksgiving show called "Turkey Secrets". Because of Hokie Bird's such huge fan following Virginia Tech students are also called "the Hokie".
Each game of Virginia Tech sports teams is attended by the Hokie Bird and thousands of avid fans. The stadium echoes with Techmen Triumph song for the big and active men in orange and maroon, who are out there with high winning hopes and are not afraid to lose. Before the game begins, The Hokie Bird enters the stadium leading the Hokies and does the bench presses for each score the team makes. Hokie runs in the students stand from top to bottom and keep a watch on those who don't cheer for the team. The ex students and players of the University always attend Hokies play live. Although the Hokies never really had a problem of support in the stands yet The Hokie Birth believes that the more the merrier and increased the teams fan following through its charismatic personality.
The Football Hokies remained the winner of Common Wealth Cup for over six years straight. They play home at the Lane Stadium which is believed to be the loudest stadium of the world and holds the title of being the most advantageous home field in the entire country. The Hokies don't let anyone win against them in Lane Stadium and the Hokie fans add their equally important psychological impact on the opponents.
