The Beginnings

The Villanova Wildcats Men?s Basketball program began to play for the first time ever in the 1920-1921 campaign. Their first coach was Michael Saxe and his six year long tenure, the Wildcats went 64-30. They played their first ever game at the Alumni Hall against the Catholic University. The Wildcats won that encounter 43-40 to get off to a positive start. They had to wait for their first major championship though. The Wildcats won the conference regular season title and the conference tournament in 1978 to end their barren run. They clinched their first NCAA Championship in 1985.

The Villanova Wildcats have won two NCAA titles in total. They have also been crowned conference regular season champions on eleven occasions and have clinched the conference tournament five times. They have also won one NIT. The Wildcats have an overall winning percentage that exceeds the .6500 mark which is a big achievement considering they have been playing for close to a century.
