University of Vermont is one of the acclaimed educational institutions in the United States and is located in Burlington, Vermont. The institute is not only known for its educational programs and the high value of its degree but also for its athletic teams which are called Vermont Catamounts. The school has 10 women’s and 8 men’s athletic programs. Most of these programs are a part of NCAA Division I America East Conference. The school has been a member of this league since 1979. The ice hockey programs of men and women are a part of Hockey East Association while the Nordic skiing and alpine play in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association. Skiing program of the school is the most successful as it has won six championships. The school also holds the team in high esteem as it is the only program which has won championships for the school. Fun in the games is provided by the school mascot Rally who goes around the stadium doing tricks to raise the spirits of the team. Vermont Catamounts has a loyal fan base that attends the games regularly and are always there to support their favorite team.
Men’s basketball team of the school is one of the most popular one and is a part of America East Conference. The team plays its home games at Patrick Gym which has a seating capacity of more than 3000 and is also used for other purposes apart from holding the basketball games. The venue is also used for holding concerts, exhibitions and trade shows.
Men’s ice hockey is another popular program of Vermont Catamounts which is a part of NCAA’s Division I. The team has appeared in NCAA tournaments five times while also appearing in NCAA Frozen Four twice. It holds Catamount Cup tournament since 1990 and has won it thrice. Gutterson Fieldhouse is the venue which holds the ice hockey home games. This indoor venue is the biggest one in all of Vermont and is also home to the ice hockey team of women’s program. The place is notable also because President Obama came here for his first public appearance in the state of Vermont.
When green and gold clad players enter the field, all eyes are upon them as fans hold Catamounts in high esteem and hope well for their champs. Especially for its ski team which has won six championships, fans are especially enthusiastic. Apart from the championships, the team has also won EISA titles 31 times, the most recent one in 2012. The team also boasts of 54 individual national champions and 66 members in the US Ski Team. In addition, the ice hockey and basketball programs are also revered among fans which are comprised of not only the alumni of University of Vermont but also the sports fans in the Burlington area.
