The Utah Grizzlies began life on the professional hockey landscape as the Nashville South Stars in 1981. Two years later, they moved to Virginia and took the name Virginia Lancers. It was around this time that the foundation stone for the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) was laid and the Lancers were one of its founding franchises.

Over the next decade and a half, they operated under seven different names and were based in five separate cities in the Southeast. In 2003, the organization suspended operations after just one season as the Lexington Men O' War. Coincidentally, the old Utah Grizzlies of the American Hockey League (AHL) also folded in 2005.

The dormant Men O' War franchise was then bought by the Elmore Sports Group headed by David Elmore and Donna Tuttle. The new owners moved the side to Utah and it took the name Utah Grizzlies, returning to compete in the ECHL from the 2005-06 season onwards. They are currently part of the league’s Western Conference Mountain Division.

Performance Record

Since their reincarnation in 2005, the Grizzlies have been perennial playoff contenders in the ECHL. They have only missed out on a place in the postseason on two occasions.
