USA Basketball is the governing body for the sport of basketball in the US. The organization represents and promotes the interest of the US in the US Olympic Committee and the FIBA. USA basketball is responsible for selecting the country’s national teams and for organizing competitive, exhibition games in the country.

US Men’s National Basketball Team

The US National team is the most successful international team in the world and is currently number one in the FIBA World Rankings. The country has participated in seventeen Olympic Games and has won medals in all of those tournaments. These include fourteen gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals.

Two of those sides, which won gold in the 1960 and 1992 games respectively, are two of the most famous sports teams of all times. The 1960 team comprised of four Hall of Fame players, while the 1992 “Dream Team” featured eleven Hall of Fame players. Both these squads have been enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Apart from the country’s success at the Olympic Games, the Men’s National team has won five FIBA World Cups and been runners up four times in the tournament. The team also has six gold medals at the FIBA Americas Championship and eight gold medals at the Pan American Games.

The United States is one of only two countries in FIBA’s Americas zone to have secured the quadruple crown of winning the Olympic Gold Medal, Pan American Gold Medal, FIBA World Championship Gold Medal and the FIBA Americas Championship Gold Medal.

Current Squad

The current squad of the national team features the best players currently playing in the NBA. These include, among others, Carmelo Anthony, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, LaMarcus Aldridge, Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins and Kevin Love. A host of other star players from different NBA sides complete the roster. It is interesting to note that the US National Team has the services of both Stephen Curry and LeBron James, the two players considered the best in the world currently. 

The squad is coached by Mike Krzyzewski, who has been selected as the National Coach of the Year a record six times by USA Basketball. Jim Boeheim, Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams serve as his assistant coaches.

Opponents

In the showcase, the US will take on the national teams of China, Nigeria, Venezuela and Argentina.

China has historically been the most successful basketball team in Asia. The country has sixteen gold medals at the Asian Championships and seven gold medals at the Asian Games. However, they are yet to win a medal at the Olympic Games or the World Championships and that is something they would want to change soon.

The Venezuela national team is the reigning champions of the Americas, after winning the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship. The US National team did not attend the 2015 edition of the event, so Venezuela has not faced them this year; however that will change during the upcoming USA Basketball Showcase.

Nigeria is the current reigning basketball champion of Africa. The team won gold at the FIBA Africa Championship and will provide a stern test for the US National Team. Nigeria also won the gold medal in basketball at the 2011 All Africa Games.

Argentina is the second most successful teams in the Americas and has a rich basketball tradition. The country is the only one in the Americas to have completed the quintuplet crown featuring the Olympic Games, World Championship, Americas Championship, Pan American Championship and the FIBA Diamond Ball. Argentina was also the first side in the world to defeat a US team comprised of professional NBA players.
