The River Hawks is the name of the collegiate varsity teams that play from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The university, more commonly known as UMass Lowell was established in 1975 after two universities, the Lowell State College and the Lowell Technological Institute were merged. The university supports ten varsity teams in total that constitute of both men and women teams consisting of men and women’s basketball, soccer and track and field/cross country, men’s golf, ice hockey and baseball, women’s field hockey, rowing, softball and volleyball. All the teams support the colors red, white and blue and their mascot is Rowdy the Hawk who also wears a costume depicting the team’s colors.
The River Hawks compete in Eastern Conference’s Division II and plays all their home games at the Costello Athletic Center. The center is also the home arena for the volleyball team and the winter refuge for the softball and baseball teams. The three floor arena was constructed in 1964, and consists of multiple courts, training facilities, a swimming pool, offices for the athletic staff and a weight room. In 2006, renovations came about during which new hardwood floors were installed, a brand new music system was added to enhance the acoustics, new collapsible seats were installed and the latest equipment was bought for the weight room. Apart from the Costello Athletic Center, few of the basketball games are also held at the many other facilities present on campus such as the Tsongas Center and the Agganis Arena. UMass Lowell River Hawks tickets are always in high demand among sports lovers.
The current roster of The River Hawks consists of eleven guard players Romeo Diaz, Nomso Emetarom, Carlos Taylor, Akeem Williams, Greg DeSantis, DJ Mlachnik, Antonio Bivins, Kerry Weldon, Mark Cornelius, Chad Holley and Sam Searcy, three front players that include Matt Welch, Kennedy Chukwuocha and Parris Massey and their center player, James McDonnell. The team is currently coached by Greg Herenda, with two assistant coaches, Brandon Arnette and Souleymane Wane.
With their mission that supports their motto "All In", the River Hawks were able to score an average of seventy seven points per game, scoring a whopping number of six hundred and twenty points in the 2012-2013 seasons whereas their opponents have been able to score five hundred and sixty five points in total. Furthermore, the River Hawks have been able to win two season home games, creating a six point winning margin between them and their opponents. Some of these rivals include the Boston University Terriers and the Boston College Eagles. Amongst some of the top scoring players for this season include Akeem Williams leading the team with one hundred and fifty points, Antonio Bivins with one hundred and eighteen points and Matt Welch with a hundred and four points.
