Sevilla FC is the reigning UEFA Cup champion and also the team with most UEFA Cup championships. Sevilla fans would be surely expecting their team to win this cup for the sixth time.

History of UEFA

The UEFA Cup is the successor of Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which was played between European teams from 1955 to 1971. Some pundits would argue that the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup helped made soccer popular in Europe. Case in point would be that when the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup began, it consisted of 11 teams, but when it concluded in 1971, it had expanded to 64 teams participated.

UEFA makes its debut

The first UEFA Cup was played in the 1971-72 season. The competing teams were Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Tottenham Hotspurs, also known as Spurs, won the inaugural championship. In 1973, Liverpool won the championship, further solidifying English hold over the league. Liverpool would once again win the Cup in 1976.

UEFA Cup goes European

In the 1980s, the English domination of the Cup weakened, as IFK Göteborg and Real Madrid won the Cup twice. Anderlecht, a Belgian professional soccer club, won in 1983.

The Italian Reign

From 1989 to 1998, it was Italian clubs that dominated the Cup, thanks to Napoli, Torino, Juventus, Internazionale, and Parma.

2001 & Beyond

In 2001, it was Liverpool once again that won the UEFA Cup. Porto, a professional soccer club based in Portugal won the Cup twice. Contrary to popular view, Sevilla is not the first Spanish club to win the UEFA Cup for Spain; it was Valencia. Valencia won the Cup in 2004, to be followed by two consecutive wins by Sevilla in 2006 and 2007.

In addition to the European soccer clubs, several Russian soccer clubs have also been successful. Zenit Saint Petersburg and CSKA Moscow won the title in 2005 and 2008. And then it was a Ukrainian club, Shakhtar Donetsk that won the UEFA Europa League Cup in 2009.

Not to be outdone by the Russians and Ukrainians, the EUFA Cup was once again claimed by a European team, Atlético, which won the Cup twice in 2010 & 2012. However, it was an English club which made UEFA history in 2013.

In 2013, Chelsea won the UEFA Cup when it was already had the Champions League title. However, since 2013, Sevilla has won the Cup consecutively in 2014 and 2015.

The UEFA Cup Trophy

The UEFA Cup, also known as the Coupe UEFA, is presented to the winning club. The trophy, however, remains with the UEFA and the winner gets a full-size replica of the trophy. Furthermore, the club which wins the Cup three times consecutively or five times overall, gets a multiple-winner badge. So far, Sevilla is the only club which has been given this badge.
