The Knights: Some History

The NCAA Division III to the top of Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, it has been an epic journey for the UCF Knights. In January of 1979, Dr. Trevor Colbourn, the second president of the university gave a speech. He wanted the university to have a successful athletics program because he was of the opinion that a good athletics program would enhance the institution's reputation.

Dr. Jack O' Leary was assigned the task of putting together a strong football program. As a result, the UCF Knight football team was formed and it began to play in the fall of the same year as members of the NCAA Division III. They joined the Mid-American Conference in the year 2002 and then began to play in the Conference USA from 2005 onwards. That is when their fortunes changed.

The Knights Dominate

The Knights went on to clinch the division title the same year. 2007 saw them win another division championship and their first conference crown. That feat was repeated in 2010. In 2012, they won a division title and then in 2013, moved to the American Athletic Conference. The Knights won the conference titles in 2013 and 2014.
