The Tulsa Driller is the minor league affiliates of the Colorado Rockies and are members of the Texas League. It is owned by the self-employed Bill Rollings when he acquired the Layfette franchise in 1977.
The Drillers went through several owners including Roy Clark, who co-owned the team for a six year tenure. Then it went into the hands of Hubbard in 1986. He was then the ex-pitcher from the team. After that, Chuck Lamson purchased much of Hubbard’s stock, and established himself as the sole owner of the team. This was in 2006. Four years later, in 2010, Lamson again made a transaction with Hubbard, selling him much of his stock back, thus making him the only owner of the team with his sons Dale and Jeff being named the co-owners. Jeff himself had experience with the team as he was a player in 1987 and a coach in 1991. Jeff and Dale became the owners when Went Hubbard died in 2012.
The Tulsa Drillers were formed in 1977 when the Louisiana team, Lafayette was moved to Tulsa and when Tulsa’s original minor league team, The Tulsa Oilers were shifted to New Orleans. Robert B. Sutton Stadium was made with 8000 seats. The venue was renamed to The Tulsa County Stadium when Robert B. Sutton became a part of a scandal which proved his corruption and he was removed.
The Driller’s had two home fields. Originally, they played at the Driller’s Stadium on home town’s County Fairground at 15th district but they switched to the ONEOK field in downtown, Tulsa Greenwood district. They started out with bad luck at their debut on the fields when they lost 7-0 to the Corpus Christi Hooks in front of a crowd of 8,665 people. The highest attendance by the team was enjoyed at the first ball park, with 408,183 spectators.
A tragedy occurred in 2007 when the team’s batting coach Mike Coolbaugh was killed by hitting his head on the line dive, later proved to be hit on the neck. CPR was administered the very moment but it was not enough to treat a serious injury and he breathed his last only an hour later. The game, which was between the Drillers and The Travelers, was canceled and the further scheduled games too, were cancelled. The Tulsa Driller tickets holders were sympathetic but they were given concessions, and were told that the games would be postponed.
The Drillers have taken part in three main championships. They have been a part of the Texas League Championship three times, the Eastern Division Championship two times and the Texas League Playoffs four times. The Tulsa Drillers tickets are available online. Over the year, their popularity has increased and so has the fan following. This season some important modifications have been made.
