Toronto FC is a professional Canadian soccer team from Toronto, Ontario. Toronto FC belongs to Major League Soccer (MLS). Major League Soccer is sanctioned by "United States Soccer Federation". MLS was established in 1993 and started off in 1996 with its first season with a total of 10 teams. Today MLS consists of 18 teams, 16 of which are from U.S and two from Canada. Annually, the seasons run from March to November.
Toronto FC started off with a long losing streak. Although the beginning wasn’t a very encouraging one, the team managed to keep the ground and is today Canada’s most successful soccer team and has a wide fan following. Toronto FC was the host of "MLS All-Star Game" in 2008. They lost the season ending at the last place. Despite that, TLC managed to build a strong foundation because of being the very first Canadian MLS team.
Toronto FC competed for "Voyageurs Cup" in 2008, although they were the heart favorites, in the end after a great game, they lost from Montreal Impact. Toronto FC managed to win Canadian Championship for next three consecutive seasons, 2009 – 2011. Their top three scorers are Dwayne De Rosario with 32 goals, Chad Barrett with 21 goals and Maicon Santos with 14 goals.
Toronto FC play their home games at "BMO Field" located in Exhibition Place of city of Toronto. It is an open-air ground and has a seating facility of 21,800. The place is owned by City of Toronto and management belongs to "Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd.". Inauguration of the ground took place on April 28th, 2007. The opening ceremony was held on May 27th, 2007. The natural grass was planted permanently in 2010, before that the ground had FieldTurf. The stadium’s seating is entirely red in color, except for the maple leaf design in white on the east side.
Some of the notable players from past that made significant contributions for Toronto FC are; "Nana Attakora, Chad Barrett, Danny Dichio, Maurice Edu, Andy Welsh, Greg Sutton and Rohan Ricketts. Till the date, Toronto FC has appeared in four Canadian Championships and has won 3 of them. TFC has also been successful in winning Trillium Cup 2011. Currently, TFC’s head coach is Aron Winter and their captain is Torsten Frings.
