The Memorial Tournament Cities

As a PGA Tour tournament, the Memorial Tournament is played on a golf course at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and creation of Jack Nicklaus. He wanted a golf club that would represent his life and his passion for golf. He also wanted the tournament to give back to the society in the form of charitable contributions to organizations of needy children and adults. The course was officially dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974 with a match between Tom Weidkopf and Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus finished the match with a record score.

The tournament soon gain fame and people all across the world started coming to watch their favorite game. The tournament was most popular in 1900s with sold-out status for the first time on the PGA tour. This status had not been achieved by a PGA tournament earlier other than major championships. One of the exciting features of the tournament is a yearly induction ceremony that honors past golfers. Near the clubhouse at Muirfield, a plaque for each honoree is installed. Jack Nicklaus himself was the honoree in 2000.

The Memorial Tournament is one of the five tournaments which have been given invitational status by the PGA tour. The Tournament has a field of 120 players only. It has more freedom to determine eligible players and it does not offer open qualifying. Other invitational tournaments are RBC Heritage, Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Arnold Palmer Invitational and At&T National.

Until 2012, six men have won the Memorial Tournament more than once. Tiger Woods won the tournament for a record 5 times, Kenny Perry won it three times while Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Hale Irwin and Greg Norman won the tournament twice.
