In 1985, Lynette Woodard, the Olympic gold medalist, basketball player, joined the Globetrotters and became the first female Globetrotter. With this, she also became the first female to play on a men’s professional basketball team. This paved the path for the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), which was founded in 1996.

Origins

The original players were all from south side of Chicago and this is where the team was formed in the 1920s. In the beginning, they were called the Savoy Big Five. In 1928, many players left the Savoy Big Five and formed “Globe Trotters.” This team later came to be known as “New York Harlem Globe Trotters.” In 1929, the team was rechristened The Harlem Globetrotters. Interestingly, the team and its players had nothing to do with Harlem and did not even play a match there till 1968. Harlem was selected due to being a center of African-American culture.
