About The Lone Star Series
The Lone Star Series is a Major League Baseball rivalry between the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros. The Rangers dominate the overall series with a record of 12-5 over the Astros. However, the Astros are currently the reigning champions with a 7-12 victory over the Rangers in the 2017 World Series.
The rivalry initially developed out of interleague play – the Rangers are a member of the American League while the Astros were a part of the National League (up till 2012). During this interleague competition, the victorious team was awarded the prestigious Silver Boot. The interleague rivalry converted into an intra-division rivalry when the Astros became a member of the American League West.
How it all Began?
For more than three decades, the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers played a bunch of games against each other in Spring Training – but no one really cared. In order to try and add a bit of spice to the meet-ups in spring, an award called “the Silver Boot” was created – and still no one cared as such.
Finally, it was in 2001, that matters began to show some signs of a potential rivalry. As part of the Interleague Play, the two teams were required to play six regular season games against each other. The six games eventually started getting some attention in the local baseball circles.
With more than 35 players having played for both teams over the years, the most high profile one being Nolan Ryan, the rivalry heated up quicker than you would imagine.
Quick Facts about the Rivalry
- Nolan Ryan’s Hall of Fame plaque depicts him wearing a Rangers cap – a choice he made himself.

- The Governor Abbott has named 3rd November 2017 to be the Houston Astros Day in Texas.
- The Houston Astros were the first team from Texas to win a World Series title in 2017 after a victory in Game 7 in November.
