About Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans were established in Houston in 1960 as one of the charter members of the old American Football League (AFL). Known as the Houston Oilers at the time, they began play at the Jeppesen Stadium a decade before the AFL-NFL merger.
The Oilers began life as a professional football franchise in spectacular fashion. They won the first two AFL championships and did so convincingly. The Los Angeles Chargers were at the receiving end of the Oilers’ brilliance both times.
Two more AFL championship game appearances followed during the 1960s. Following the big merger in 1970, the Oilers became a part of the NFL’s American Football Conference (AFC). During their time in Houston, the Oilers played their home games at the Jeppesen Stadium, Rice Stadium and the Houston Astrodome.
After the relocation to Tennessee in 1997, the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis served as the Oilers’ home for one season. In 1998, they moved to Nashville and the Vanderbilt Stadium became their home field. During these two years, the franchise was known as the “Tennessee Oilers.”
In 1999, the name was changed to “Tennessee Titans.” The change of name brought a change in fortunes as well. That same year, the Titans made it to their first Super Bowl. By now, they had moved to Nashville and made the Nissan Stadium their home.
