The start

The NHL announced in the first half of the 1980s that it plans on expanding the league. That was cue for two groups of investors from the St. Petersburg and Tampa regions to come up with their bids. The Tampa based consortium was headed by Phil and Tony Esposito. After some financial issues, they eventually put their house in order and managed to get the NHL award them a hockey franchise. The new team was to start playing from the 1992-1993 season. The Tampa Bay Lightning had joined the NHL.

The performances

The Tampa Bay Lightning failed to make it to the playoffs for the first three seasons. They ended that little drought by going all the way to the Conference Quarterfinals in the 1995-1996 season. That was followed by another long postseason drought.

The Lightning then turned things around in spectacular fashion by winning the division title in 2002-2003 season. That was followed by a division crown, a conference championship and a Stanley Cup the very next season. The Lightning have won one more conference title since then.

They will be looking to beat the Wild in their next game but it will not be easy. It is all set up for a humdinger of a clash at the Xcel Energy Center.
