Syracuse Crunch – The Beginnings

The Syracuse Crunch were incepted in the year 1992 and they were known as the Hamilton Canucks back then. They began their journey as affiliates of the Vancouver Canucks. They remained in Hamilton for two seasons before making the move to New York in 1994. They were renamed “Crunch” and played in Syracuse for the first time in September, 1994. They notched up a 29-42-9-0 record in their maiden campaign.

The Championships

The Syracuse Crunch have not been able to get their hands on the AHL Championship till now but that is not to say they have not enjoyed any success. The Crunch shot to prominence for the first time in the 2001-2002 season when they lifted the division title, their maiden major championship.

That triumph was followed by a lean period. They roared back in 2012-2013 by winning the division and conference double. They won another division championship and a conference crown in 2016-2017. The Crunch then won another division championship in the 2018-2019 campaign.

That was the last season before COVID-19 began to wreak havoc. The next season was cancelled due to the pandemic and no postseason took place in 2020-2021 either. 2021-2022 saw them return to the playoffs once again but their journey ended in the First Round.

The Syracuse Crunch Affiliates History

The Syracuse Crunch have been affiliated with plenty of NHL sides in the past. They started off as affiliates of the Vancouver Canucks. The year 1997 saw them become affiliates of the Pittsburgh Penguins as well. Their affiliation with the Penguins ended at the conclusion of the 1998-1999 campaign. 1999-2000 was the Crunch’s last season as Vancouver Canuck affiliates.

The Columbus Blue Jackets were formed in 2000 and they brought the Crunch on board as their affiliates almost immediately. That arrangement remained till 2010, after which the Crunch joined hands with the Anaheim Ducks. They remained Anaheim affiliates for two seasons only. They joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as their affiliate partners and this arrangement is still in place.
